KEEP THOSE BIRD FEEDERS FILLED

Our little feathered friends need an extra supply of food this time of year as berries and seeds become harder and harder for them to find.  Contrary to popular belief, feeding the birds will not keep them from flying south.  The ones that stay in this area will grace your landscape with a ton of color during this season.  There is nothing quite as calming as sitting in a large window or door with a cup of coffee or a cup of hot chocolate and watching the birds.  Who knows, you might want to get a book on bird identification and see how many different types of birds show up.  Involve the kids and/or grandkids in this activity, they'll probably find more than you will.

Things to do

-Time to drag out all your hand tools and give them a good cleaning and sharpening.  You can use steel wool ar a medium grit sandpaper to clean metal surfaces with.  If you don't have the tools or the know how to sharpen your tools , just email me and I will put you in touch with someone who can help you.

-Plant your cold weather annuals such as Snapdragons, English Daisies, Sweet William, Pansies, and Nasturtiums.

- You can also plant your cold crop vegetables such as Broccoli, Kale, Carrots, Onions, Cauliflower, and English Peas.

-Now is the time to prune your Crepe Myrtles if you haven't already.

-You can also prune most evergreens.

-Do not however prune any of your spring flowering shrubs such as azaleas, forsythia,or rhododendrums.

-Roses can be pruned or transplanted about the third week of February.

-This is also a good time to plant Dogwood trees.

- Now is a good time to spot spray green onions and and other pesky weeds in your landscape.

When you are through with your pruning chores, be sure and haul away the debris-I don't recommend putting it your compost pile unless you are for certain that it is disease free.

-Be sure and keep an eye on the weather forecast, just in case there is a freeze warning or a chance of a heavy frost.  Cover those tender young plants with a layer of straw.
